Regeneration Scheme for Macclesfield is Scaled Back

Many areas of the North West are set for their own major regeneration schemes over the coming years. One of the most ambitious is that in Salford with the a budget of £650m, but Macclesfield too had its own plans. These included the construction of 50 retail units including a Debenhams store as well as a multi screen cinemas.
These plans which were largely welcomed by people living in the area have now however been scaled back. The Cheshire East Council said that the reason for this was due to the impact of the economic downturn.
Many existing retailers in Macclesfield are now getting nervous about what regeneration plans will be brought in and are reluctant to extend their leases, in case they find themselves suddenly in a quieter area of the town.
It looks now that plans for regeneration will go ahead albeit a much smaller scheme than originally planned.
